I was in Vegas recently for work.  I was waiting for the flight to board when they announced they were overbooked and were looking for a volunteer to take a later flight in exchange for a $300 voucher.  I knew that they could go to $400 so I asked them if they could do $400.  She said no.  So I said I’d think about it.   

They kept announcing they were still looking for a volunteer.  No takers.  When I saw her get on the phone I knew my patience was going to pay off.  Sure enough, after she hung up the phone she started to announce that she got approval to go to $400 and I stepped in front of her and she said “never mind”.  I also got a $12 food voucher and two free drink tickets. 

There were already two others that had taken the offer for $300.  Being that they upped the amount for me to $400, they also got a $400 voucher.  Before she made my seat available she had to make sure there weren’t people that weren’t going to show up, so then the airline wouldn’t have to offer the vouchers.  One guy still hadn’t showed up and he had 4 minutes to get there – she even announced so in the airport.  I saw a guy rushing, but then he went to the wrong gate.  The dip was late and didn’t pay attention to which gate he was supposed to go to.  He was the last guy and he made it with maybe a minute to spare after the attendant told him the right gate.  Had he not showed up I would’ve gotten on the plane and not gotten the voucher.

During my wait for the next plane which was 4 hours later I heard other flights offering vouchers because they overbooked.  One offered two roundtrips and a free hotel for the night.  Nowadays a lot of flights are overbooked, so you have a good chance of getting a voucher.  Book an earlier flight knowing there is a good chance you can take a later flight in order to get a voucher. 

Matt Ghaffari, the former Olympic wrestler was on the flight.  Damn glad I didn’t sit next to him since he is ten feet wide.  I don’t think I would’ve won that arm rest battle.  However, I did end up next to someone that was farting and I didn’t have any Febreeze or Glade to help.  I had to smell my t-shirt instead. 

At the conference one of the gals that cleaned tables after each meal and set them up told us that she made $100K a year!  I was amazed.  Vegas is hard up for many workers.  Teachers get phone interviewed and get hired without proper checks.  Someone that lived there told me every year they eventually find teachers with criminal records since they don’t do a great job of checking backgrounds.  And I was told that 25% of doctors hired in the state are found to be disbarred from other states. 

Some tips:

- I parked at the airport for $5 a day.  Sign up on the web-sites to any of the local parking companies to get deals e-mailed to you.  Sign up for their rewards program to get free parking in the future.

- Get some free tics for places by asking the concierge for some.

- Double decker (deuce) busses are only $1.25…take them since the casinos are much farther than they look – I think I even saw the buildings moving further away as I got closer.

- Sign up for the casino’s player cards so that they offer you deals later on.

- Bring Nivea…it’s dry in the desert.

We saw the two kids from the Mentor Mitsubishi commercials there.  They’re just like they were in the commercial.  Ants in their pants.  Funny.  The boy grabbed a drink sitting on a table and the Mom yanked him away from it and yelled that he couldn’t drink it…it was a mixed drink.
